September 5th-it was special meeting new friends today and learning about all the centers in our classroom! September 6th- we have started exploring some of the interesting activities in our classroom and learn to clean up when activity time is over. September 8th- What a fun day! We shared new play doh and have been trying to make them into balls or sticks. The special toy of the day was Legos; wow, did we make a tall tower. When it fell, we worked together to fix it. Enjoy your weekend September 11th- Today we started " All About Me" week. The children made self-portraits, using a mirror to help focus on their facial features. We also graphed our favorite colors and flavors of ice cream, comparing more and less. September 12th- We are establishing class rules, such as helping friends and be kind. September 13- We learned about fingerprints, finding them in playdoh, and on paper when we touched the ink pad. September 14- Since we have been learning about human homes, we wanted to build some in the classroom. Our book of the day was A House is a House for Me. September 18- We read a book by Leo Lionni called A Color His Own. As the chameleon searches for his own color, we blended colors on a coffee with drops of water. We helped make rainbows. September 19th-We used colored tiles to look at the light, then added another color to see how the colors changed. The children were amazed as they created new colors by overlapping the tiles. September 20th- the class had the opportunity to mix and blend new colors by mixing paint on our easel. They were so excited to change the colors themselves. September 28th- We wrapped up our week of learning about maps, compasses, and magnets by painting with magnets! We put paper inside a box, added a few drops of paint and some small magnets, then moved them around with another magnet under the box. Each one came out unique and different. We also made our own shofars, representing the ram's horn blown during the highest Jewish holiday. October 2nd- As an introduction to autumn, we investigated apples with all of our senses. We noticed how they felt, smelled, and tasted, of course! We looked at the different parts of an apple: stem, peel/skin, flesh, core, and pits. We made two picture graphs, one for our favorite color, the other for which one tasted the best. The results were surprising. October 3rd -We began noticing the changes in nature as autumn continues. We have become aware of the chill in the early in the morning and the leaves on the trees turning different colors. We continue to learn new letters using Handwriting Without Tears! October 4th- We read a nonfiction book called When Autumn Comes, which had real photographs of the ways nature changes around this time of year. We got to see the sukkah, a traditional sort of shack in which Jewish people eat their meals during the holiday of Sukkot. To help celebrate, we made a big paper chain for decorating the sukkah; it was 48 links long! Enjoy your extended weekend and we'll see everyone on Tuesday. October 10th- Today, we learned that the leaves are green because of chlorophyll. When plants get ready for winter, they stop making chlorophyll and we can see the colors hiding behind it. We even made a display of what happens; please feel free to interact with our bulletin board! October 16th - Mat Man made a return to our class today! This a game we use with the children from our Handwriting Without Tears program. We made easy work of creating the letters we have already learned to write, and introduced this week's handwriting letter, B, as well. We had fun trying to create letters out of playdoh, too! October 17th - Part of our theme this week is harvest time and the farm. We read a rebus book titled Inside a Barn in the Country, which we made interactive. The children had so much fun making the animal sounds, some of them wanted to read it again. When our turn came to use the Promethean board, the class was very excited to see some videos of real farm animals in their home environment. We also made decorations to celebrate Diwali; watch for them on our bulletin board. October 18th - Our school is so fortunate to have such great parents! They put together a lovely party for Diwali, the Hindu new year and festival of light. Our class got to make a traditional craft, a children's version of a Diva lamp, which should be in your child's backpack; please look for it because it is made of clay and might be a bit fragile. We sampled some treats and even got to dress in traditional clothes. Miss Billi even wore a sari! We want to thank everyone involved in making our celebration so special and sharing Diwali with us. October 19th- We continued our farm theme today by sorting farm animals and wild animals. We also played a silly game where we got to flap like a chicken, roll like a pig, gallop like a horse, and milk a cow like the farmer! There was a lot of laughter and fun. Separately, if you have not done so, please send in a smock for your child. Anything that will protect their clothes will do, even old clothes. This way, we can try to keep everyone clean while we create our projects. October 20th- Our class was very busy today. We started our day by hosting our weekly Shabbat party. It's nice to have our friends in Miss Clara's class come share in the celebration. Next, we went to the gym and jumped around with a coach. The children did so well, they each got a "smelly" stamp that smelled like chocolate. Then, we headed to library. We read a book about farm animals and got to choose a new book to borrow. Please enjoy the book and be sure to return it by next Friday so your child may choose another one. Then, we took advantage of the beautiful weather by playing on the playground. Before we knew it, it was lunchtime! Even lunch is special on Fridays and we got to have our favorite, pizza! And ice cream to top it off! What a day! October 23rd- We became science detectives today. First, we made observations about an apple; we noticed how it looked, its weight, the skin's texture, and the apple's scent. Next, we cut it open and noticed its scent was stronger and the flesh was slightly yellow. Then, we made predictions about how it might change if we left the cut apple uncovered. By the end of the day, the flesh had started to turn very slightly brown. We will check it tomorrow and see what has changed overnight. October 24th- Today was a good day to start to learn more about weather. The children colored pictures of different types of weather and knew quite a few of them, such as sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, and snowy. We learned about some of the more unfamiliar forms of weather, as well. We defined foggy as clouds that came down from the sky and make it difficult to see any distance. Lightning is the light we see in the sky sometimes when it rains and the loud rumbling noise that follows it is thunder. A storm is a combination of wind, rain, clouds, and often, thunder and lightning, too. The children looked out the window frequently to see if the weather had changed. October 25th- Our trip to White Post Farms and petting zoo was a great success. The children had their first experience riding on a school bus, which was exciting. When we got to our destination, there were so many animal enclosures, we didn't know where to go first! The children got to feed camels, antelope, goats, bulls, and zebras! We also got to see monkeys, kangaroos, parrots, turtles, and fish. Stay tuned for our pictures to be posted. As far as our Halloween party on Tuesday, we have a fun, very busy day planned. The children are encouraged to wear their costumes. We will be playing some fun games, as well as making jack-o-lanterns. We would like to celebrate with some Halloween treats, so if you would like to join in the fun, please feel free to send in a small treat for the class. October 26th- Our children are beginning to make some real progress with their handwriting! We practice everyday when they first arrive at school and the children are beginning to trace the letters and shapes with little to no assistance from us adults; it is very exciting to see the surprise on their faces. They also helped to predict what they believe will happen if we leave the cut apple out overnight. October 27th- The children have been practicing handwriting daily and we are starting to see some nice progress! In addition to our Handwriting Without Tears program, we also use erasable, laminated sheets to trace and try shapes, letters and their names. Please encourage your child to continue this at home. Friday is always a special day. We celebrated Shabbat, played on the playground, and got to choose another book to borrow from the library. What a nice ending to our week. October 30th- We had an exciting start to a an fun-filled week. Continuing our lessons about weather, we made our very own rainstorm! It is a very simple experiment using water, shaving cream, and food coloring; combined in the right order, we were able to see how rain clouds become so full of water, they can no longer hold onto any more and see how the rain falls. Don't forget- tomorrow is Halloween, so please send your child to school in costume. We will be playing games, making a craft to bring home, and even trick-or-treating with other classes, plus taking a trip across the parking lot to visit the firehouse, so we are all looking forward to a fun day! Please be sure to sign the permission slip so everyone can join in the fun! October 31st- What a fun day! We went on a trip to the firehouse across the parking lot from our school. Some of our students got to demonstrate "stop, drop, and roll", others tried on a firefighters' jacket (wow, it was heavy!), and we got to get into a real fire engine. When we returned to school, we played Halloween games, invited our friends in Miss Clara and Miss Dada's class to trick-or-treat with us, and heard one of Miss Billi's favorite Halloween stories. Everyone had a great day. November 1- Today we learned all about the number 3. One-to-One correspondence is a foundational math skill for preschoolers. It can take months or even an entire year for preschoolers to master this skill. For this reason it is important to provide our children with plenty of opportunities to practice one-to-one correspondence all year long. November 2nd- Today, the children made an interesting discovery. In recent weeks, they have been learning a lot about apples. We took the balance from our math center and found that an apple is heavy, compared with our toys and manipulatives. They were amazed to see the apple floating. From there, the class tried a few more objects from around the room. November 3rd- We have rearranged some areas of the classroom and, by far, the most popular center is our newly revamped writing center. With papers of different textures and colors, colored pencils, crayons, and glue sticks, the children could not resist. There are even envelopes for sending letters. Some beautiful work will be coming from that center. November 6th- With Thanksgiving nearly here, we are learning the difference between things that we need in order to live and things that we want. We will also be touching on the things we have now that did not exist long ago. We played a few games to reinforce the children's number and letter recognition. One particular favorite is called "BOOM!", a letter game in which the children get to jump up and yell "BOOM!" when the card shows up in the deck. November 7th- Today was a very busy day for our class. A real scientist, Miss Rebecca, came to demonstrate her equipment and had both Miss Clara's and our class participate in some experiments with water and food coloring. Today we also compared raw berries with cooked ones, measuring them on a balance, and ultimately smashing the cooked ones with a plastic hammer. Then we were able to paint, and although it was initially red, it turned purple, then gray as it dried. All in all, a great day for making discoveries! November 8th- Our visiting scientist, Miss Rebecca, returned today. This time, the children all had a turn looking through a real microscope. Then, they were asked to try to draw what they saw, which were onion cells. Everyone was fascinated by the microscope and several children wanted a second turn to look. If you have not already done so, please be sure to sign up for a parent-teacher conference, which will be on Thursday, the 16th. I look forward to speaking with you. November 13th- In preparation for learning about the first Thanksgiving tomorrow, we read a book called Why Should I Share? It offered the students many clear examples of how sharing can help make friendships. After the book, we played a game with stickers which we called "One for me and one for you". Each student was given two stickers; one for them to keep and one to be given to a friend. This concept can be difficult for young children to process but our game gave everyone the opportunity to give and receive. We will be concentrating on taking turns and working cooperatively. November 14th- The curiosity of one of our students wound up being the impetus for us to have a spur-of-the-moment science experiment. During snack today, she kept putting drops of water on her napkin. It seems that she was interested in how the water was absorbed. So, we used a clean paper towel, twisting the end of it tightly before placing the sharp point into a cup of colored water. We were able to watch as the water climbed UP the paper towel, eventually spilling out upon our table! When we poured water, it would only go down. How could water possibly defy gravity? Through a process called capillary action. The fibers of the paper were interwoven in such a way as to allow the water to move from one fiber to the next. Even the smallest things can be fascinating! November 14th- Since we have been learning about Thanksgiving and harvest time, we started to work on creating a cornucopia. Rather than merely color or paint, we used some of the items found around our classroom; wheels, play food, oddly shaped items, etc. So we are calling our work "environmental painting", using our everyday objects instead of plain paintbrushes. It allowed our students to explore different textures and patterns. It was also a lot of fun. Please watch for our finished product on our bulletin board! November 17th- Every Friday, we have a party to celebrate Shabbat. The children look forward to the singing, dancing, and silly games we play as we celebrate. It is so beautiful to share another culture's traditions with them and to see how much they enjoy, and remember, it. November 20th- The children started their costumes for our Thanksgiving feast today. They were coloring and gluing them together, sharing crayons and markers, glue and leaves. Our costumes would be rather drab since we are Pilgrims, who dressed in dark and muted colors to assert their faith, so we perked them up with the addition of some autumn "leaves" that we painted. Now, we are following their tradition but still were able to be creative. November 21st- We were baking cornbread today, in preparation for our Thanksgiving "feast" tomorrow. Baking and cooking are great STEM activities, covering math through measuring and using time and temperature. We get the science aspect by comparing the state of the batter before and after it is baked, paying attention to its weight and texture. We made enough to share with the whole school. November 22nd- We had our school-wide feast today! Each class contributed a dish that they made and everyone had the opportunity to try everything our friends in other classes made. There was cranberry compote, mashed potatoes, yams with marshmallows, carrots, and our cornbread. It was nice to share with everyone and learn about what they did to make their dish. The food must have been very good, since there was a lull once everyone was served. Happy Thanksgiving to each and everyone one of our families! May your hearts, and stomachs, be full. November 27th- We had an exciting first day back, with so very many stories about being with our families. The children were very happy to be back at school and many of the stories revolved around not just the food but the traditions we share. It was a truly pleasant way to return from the long weekend. November 28th- Today we started an experiment involving the states of matter of water. One cup was left at room temperature in our classroom, another was placed in the freezer, and the last was placed outside on our windowsill. We will have to wait until tomorrow to examine the full effects. In the meantime, we have started working on our newest bulletin board display; stay tuned to see the results! November 30- Our experiment did not work out as we had expected, due to the weather being a bit too temperate, We will try again when the temperature is cooler and see if we can get water to phase into each of its states. December 1- Friday means Shabbat party and the children really look forward to the singing, dancing, prayers, and most especially the treats we reserve for our special day. They are always reluctant to leave our classroom to move on to our next activities! December 4- This week, we started our unit on how winter weather affects animals. Today we discussed the gold weather's effects on animals that hibernate, finding adequate food and safe shelter to ride out the worst if the winter months. We will be covering how other animals adapt or migrate in order to survive. December 5- Out entire school participated in creating animals who hibernate during the winter. We had a lot of fun creating our bats hanging from the top of the caves. Please be sure to stop by our collective mural and see the animals we created! December 6-As we learn about animals' survival techniques in the unforgiving winter weather conditions, we will try to replicate their conditions by having our own winter pajama party tomorrow, Thursday, Dec. 7th. Please send your children in warm pajamas, slippers, and stuffed animals to imagine what it would be like to try to survive such cold and severe conditions. December 7 - We had our hibernation party today! Everyone looked adorable in their pajamas and stuffed animals. We got to experience being in a cave or den and had special treats to celebrate pretending to be a hibernating animal by playing in dens and caves. We had songs to sing and books to read about the animals who prepared for winter by storing food and readying themselves for the cold winter months. The children spent the day "readying" themselves for the long, cold winter. December 11- Today, we enjoyed a special treat; oversized gingerbread men, with icing and all sorts of decorations, donated to the entire school by a parent for the holidays! Of course, we could not have the children create their cookies without eating them, oversized though they were, so, needless to say, no one ate their lunch. What is the fun in the holidays if we can not indulge our little ones every once in a while? December 12- With Hanukkah beginning tonight, we talked about the traditions that are observed for the holiday. We know that there is a special candleholder called a menorah that has eight candles and one "helper" candle (nine in total). There are special foods, treats, and games associated with Hanukkah, the most famous being the dreidle game and song. We tried to make some of the spinning tops out of art clay, but we found it very challenging! December 13- As we walked down to the ulam today, we noticed the beautiful silver menorah. Only two of the candles had been lit, the one in the center, called the sammash, and the one furthest to the right. Tonight, there will be three candles; the center and two more, adding one more each night until the entire menorah is lit. We played a toss-the-pom-pom, a fun early addition game, trying to get the highest score. December 14- Today, we built snowmen. The children were given all of the components to create one and we figured out step by step how to use the pieces. We used many words relating to position in space, an important early math concept. Look for our snowmen and how we built them on the bulletin board outside our classroom. December 15- The children had a lot of fun activities preparing for our holiday party with you on Monday, but today was one of our favorites; baking cookies! Baking and cooking with your child is an easy way to bring STEM activities into your home. Of course, they loved to help mix, measure, and decorate the cookies; they smelled so good, we could hardly resist a little taste. We hope you enjoy them! December 18- We had such a fun time at our holiday party! Thank you so much to all the parents, grandparents and relatives that attended. The children enjoyed singing, making crafts and eating yummy treats with you! December 19- Today we had a special guest come to read us a story! Peggy Grubman is the author of the book "How Do You Get a Mouse to Smile". The children have a signed copy and some bookmarks in their backpacks. We did a STEM project, we created 'snow' by using a little bit of snow powder and 2oz of water! It was very interesting to see it grow into what looked and felt like real snow! We also worked on letter recognition using the first letter of their names and they also practiced writing their names. Look for the project in their backpacks! December 20- During center time this morning, some of our students requested opening the transportation center. They picked up where we left off in a large group lesson last week, finding a stable way for toy cars to cross a chasm. When we left it, we were considering using more than one type of building material. We already discovered that a plain piece of paper was inadequate, so we tried inverted drinking cups as the base and put our sheet of paper over them. The cups held the weight of the cars, while the paper eliminated the crevices between cups. One by one, our Matchbox cars crossed the "canyon"! Well done! January 2- Happy New Year and welcome back! We have a new addition to our class; her name is Chloe and she had a wonderful first day making new friends and exploring our classroom. As a class, we talked about the new year and that it ends in December. The new solar year begins with January and it is now 2018. We talked about what we would like to learn or learn to do better and illustrated our ideas on the new year's hats we made. We also talked about how time passes by noting random times during our school day and what we were doing at that time. Time is a difficult, abstract concept but we managed to make it a little more concrete. January 3- To make the passage of time even more concrete for the children, we looked at the trees. We noticed that trees in winter are bare, except for occasional snow or ice decorating them, while spring trees bear buds that become baby leaves. Our tree book will include how trees look in summer and autumn so we can see the cyclical changes that occur in nature every year. Separately, we are in dire need of baby wipes; our supplies are nearly gone! Any donations would be greatly appreciated, since we use them every day. Thank you in advance for your contributions. Keep your fingers crossed. January 8- We hope everyone stayed nice and warm in the storm last week. Today we read the book The Mitten by Jan Brett. The children learned about the letter "M" and practiced writing it, They also created a mitten art project and did some math regarding the mitten. First they measured a mitten (or a glove in our case) using snowballs on paper to see how long it was. The children then colored in the amount of snowballs and traced the number. Take a look at your child's mitten art project up on the bulletin board! They are so proud to show off their hand prints in the mitten! January 9- Today we looked at the four seasons through trees. We read The Mitten by Jan Brett and counted how many animals can fit into the mitten. We observed elastic and balloons to see how certain materials such as the mitten can stretch. January 10- Cornell brought a "cow" for us to milk, read us a book, we got to churn milk, vanilla, etc. to make ice cream that we got to eat! It was delicious! We observed and described the ice from the churn. The words that were used by the children were hard, cold and heavy. January 11- The children always love it when the music teacher Mr. Mike comes to visit! They sang, danced and had a lots of fun! They finished their four seasons book which has a tree for each season. We learned about black and white animals including penguins. The children even created a penguin art project out of a paper plate which will be displayed on the bulletin board. January 12- The children created an art project using their hands for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and we discussed his ideal of acceptance and friendship. We also did a science experiment using a brown egg and a white egg. Some children thought because of the colors on the outside, they would be different on the inside but they were surprised that they were both the same color on the inside. An interesting concept to learn at a young age that we are all alike no matter what color we are! January 16- Today was all about penguins! The children played a penguin fact board game, watched penguin fact videos on the promethium board and did a science project with how many feathers can fit in a 1" square. January 17, 2018- Today was a busy day! We learned about Benjamin Franklin by reading the book Now and Ben The Modern Inventions of Benjamin Franklin by Gene Barretta and how he invented so many things we use today! The children played with the board game Mouse Trap and learned about chain reactions. They also learned potential (resting) energy and kinetic (moving) energy using marbles, toy cars and ramps (inclined plane is a simple machine). January 18, 2018- We built and started testing our Rube Goldberg machine. The children began to learn about polar bears on the promethian board and read the Scholastic magazine and learned even more about penguins. January 19, 2018- Today we put the last finishing touches on our Rube Goldberg machine. The children cheered for one another as they took turns trying it out. They also helped work out some of the kinks so the contraption worked better and better with each round. January 22- We started writing the litter L in our Handwriting without Tears program. We are going to build an igloo with corrugared cardboard boxes but needed to plan how to do it so we drew up blueprints. Watch for both in the hallway right outside our classroom. Learned more about polar bears by watching National Geographic videos on our promethian board. January 23- Worked on review of all letters we have covered so far in handwriting. Continued working on igloos and very excited to see it finished. We had a special assembly AAA came to talk about car safety and we got to meet Otto the talking auto, who also talked about being safe around cars. January24- Today everyone helped to freeze paint for to paint with tomorrow. Can't wait to see how it will work. The children colored and traced the yellow page in our on-going color book. We continued to work on our igloo and put the finishing touches on our polar bear! What a busy day! January25- We worked on our igloo, counted how many ice blocks we needed to complete it and experimented painting with frozen paint. It was a fun day! January26- In our continuation about polar bears, we learned about camouflage. Polar bears use camouflage to escape predators. The children drew with white crayon on white paper and colored with differed colored markers on top to see what we drew. January 29- Continuing our study of arctic animals, including snowy owls, arctic fox, seals, reindeer, narwhals and orcas. The children were fascinated how these animals can survive in such bitterly cold weather. We also continued learning about camouflage as a survival adaptation to protect them from predators. Class is doing very well tracing letters through our Handwriting without Tears program. We are up to the letter U. January 30- We learned more about animals using camouflage to hide from predators or sneak up on prey. We started working on a fun art project in preparation for our Chinese New Year celebration. Enjoyed ourselves playing with a parachute during our p.e. class, too! January 31- We learned more about camouflage and that many arctic animals could become extinct within the next fifty years unless we do something to reverse the effects of climate change quickly. February 1- We have been practicing hard in preparation for our Chinese New Year celebration. Children have been having a great time working with Mr. Mike on learning piano. Our class had a wonderful surprise with our visiting police officers teaching us about safety. We got to paint with homemade puffy paint making decorations for our up-coming New Year celebration. Please be sure to return your invitations so we will have enough seating for everyone. We look forward to seeing everyone there. February 2- We learned more about light and shadows and read a book about Groundhogs Day in the library. February 5- We discussed and learned about Chinese New Year by creating projects and by watching videos about it on the promethean board. February 6- Today the children are beginning to learn about healthy habits. We are going to create a project with healthy foods and "sometimes" foods in the next couple of days. They loved watching videos about healthy habits such as brushing teeth, taking baths and eating healthy on the promethean board. We changed out our bulletin board with our Chinese New Year dragon! Everyone in the class contributed in helping put it together. We will be adding more projects on the board created by the children as it gets closer to the holiday. Please be sure to return your invitations for the Chinese New Year celebration so we will have enough seating for everyone. We look forward to seeing everyone there. February 7- Today we had a visit from the Dentist. She talked about brushing, flossing and eating healthy foods. The children loved the puppet show and brushing the dinosaurs teeth. We continued learning about healthy habits and everyday foods vs. sometimes foods. February 8- The children loved "ice-skating" today! We put shaving cream on the mats, the children wore booties and "ice skated" (with some help). We continued learning about healthy foods and created a healthy foods plate and sometimes food plates. The children picked out which food stickers were healthy and which ones were sometimes and stuck them on the appropriate plate. They were so eager to choose the foods they loved! February 9-Every morning we have the opportunity to practice our handwriting. We have been very successful with our Handwriting Without Tears program. The children had so much fun getting their lanterns ready for Chinese New Year. Our bulletin board is complete and it looks amazing! The children worked hard on the projects to celebrate the New Year and we hope that you enjoy it! We can't wait until next week! Have a good weekend! February 12- The children had fun learning about shadows and practicing different shadows on the wall with a flashlight. They learned that when an object is blocking the light, it creates a shadow! This week we will be learning about the solar system! February 13- Today we learned about Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The kids enjoyed the experiment of seeing how ketchup cleaned pennies. They also learned about money, how grown-ups get money to spend. February 14- Today we had a special visit from Miss Rebecca who taught about Carbon Dioxide and how to blow up balloons with different chemical reactions! The children enjoyed practicing patterns and doing a Scholastic worksheet on friendship. Thank you for everyone who sent something special for the kids for Valentine's Day! We hope you all enjoy the special gifts the children made for the people they love. Have a Happy Valentine's Day! February 15- What a great day it was celebrating Chinese New Year! The children who participated did an amazing job and we are so proud of them! We hope everyone has a great vacation and we can't wait to see you all when we get back! February 26- We hope everyone had a great break! Today we read the book 10 Apples Up On Top by Dr. Seuss and did a STEM experiment to see how many cups we could stack up. The children were given big and little plastic cups and square pieces of paper and had to figure out how to make them stack up. They had a lot of fun seeing who can stack them the tallest before it fell down! We are getting ready for our Purim celebration. Today we made the dough for our hamantaschen cookies. We can't wait to create cookies out of the dough! February 27- Today we had a lot of fun creating projects for our Purim celebration! The children made hamantaschen paper cookies, decorated their groggers (noise makers) and used their handprints to create a mask. Take a look at their projects on the bulletin board. Tomorrow is Purim, so please have your child dress in costume (please no masks) for our costume parade! February 28- The children had an exciting time walking in the parade with their costumes! We finished making (and eating) our hamantaschen cookies. Some cookies were sent home in the children's backpacks. The children used their fine motor skills by ripping paper to create blue and red fish for Dr. Seuss's birthday! March 2- Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Today we read Green Eggs & Ham, a Dr. Seuss favorite. Repeating sounds frequently help a child master reading skills. Dr. Seuss is the master of repetitive sounds and engaging stories. He also used limited vocabulary which is an ideal combination for a beginning reader. We celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday today with a cake we baked. We learned about what tools we use to bake cakes. March 5- Introduction of wind/air. We read The Three Little Pigs. Then we built a house of straw's and then children laughed as they blew it down. Engineering challenge of the week, which is the strongest material in school that we have to build a house? March 6-Today we continued our challenge and used "sticks" to build a house. We tried to blow it down after construction of the house. We blew pom poms with straws to see if larger or smaller pom pom's would go further. March 8 - Today we continued to learn more about wind/air, how we use it and what it can do. The letter the children learned about was "W" for wind. We also did a STEM experiment using paint and straws. The children had to blow paint on the paper. It was fun seeing the effects of the paint depending on how much air you blew into the straw. Take a look at the children's projects from today on the bulletin board. March 9 - The children learned math today. They traced number and matched the correct number with with the correct items. We also created a chart to see if there is the letter E in our names. Have a nice weekend and we will see you all next week! March 12 - We use our 5 senses every day! The kids had fun learning about how they see, taste, smell, hear and touch. We will learn more about it as the week goes on and even do some fun experiments! The children worked on their fine motor skills by using scissors! They did a great job. Continue to encourage your child to work on their fine motor skills at home! March 13 - We had some special visitors from Miss Clara's class today! It's fun making new friends! The children used their sense of smell and touch as they tried to guess a fruit! Was it lemon, lime or grapefruit? They created a 5 senses book where they cut and pasted the appropriate photo to the page. The letter G was what we concentrated on today with a worksheet. Please continue to practice their letters and numbers at home! March 14 - We used our sense of smell today! We mixed paint and flavored powder to create paint that smells! The children painted with grape, fruit punch and orange scented paint. Our art project also became a science project; when the powder mixed with the paint, the paint became a liquid! Who knew! We are also working on the letter F this week. The children created a fireman and traced fire trucks to create the letter F. I look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow for the parent-teacher conference! March 15 - The letter F is for many things such as fire, fish, firetruck and many others. The children enjoyed recognizing what the items the letter F starts with. We hope you enjoyed making the number puzzle with your children. They had fun with it in class! March 16 - Saturday is St. Patricks Day and to celebrate, the children created an art project to take home. We hope you enjoy it as much as they enjoyed creating it. We also continued to learn about the letter F. I hope you all have a great weekend! March 19 - We worked on letter recognition forthe letter E this week. We will be incorporating the letter E in art work, handwriting and other STEM projects throughout the week. This week the theme is flowers. The children worked on shape and number recognition as they created a flower out of construction paper. They were instructed to count out 6 shapes to use as the petals. Keep a look out for it on the bulletin board and some other flower worksheets in your child's folder. March 20 - Today we concentrated on number recognition and completed some worksheets. The children traced the number words and dotted with the dot markers and drew lines from the corresponding numbers to the same number of cupcakes. Practicing one to one correspondence is a skill we will continue doing each week. We also continue learning sounds of letters each week.The children came up with words that started with the letter E such as egg, elephant and eleven. Please continue to go over numbers with your children. A great way that they love to learn is a game called BOOM! We will be creating these games to take home in the next week or so. March 23 - I hope everyone had great snow days! Today was all about the letter E! We did a lot of worksheets with one on one recognition with the letter and we also did some crafts such as E is for egg and a paper bag elephant. Look for your child's craft on the bulletin board! I hope everyone has a great weekend and I look forward for an exciting week coming up! March 26 - Today was all about STEM! We created a science project for the letter D. Each child did a salt painting. We used glue, salt and food coloring. When food coloring mixes with salt, it makes a chemical reaction soaking the color through the salt! The children had a lot of fun with letter recognition by creating D using the wooden pieces of Mat Man! Then they practiced drawing the letter D on the promethium board and on some worksheets. They also got to make Matzoh granola for tomorrow's Sedar! They can't wait to try it! YUM! Look in your child's folder for information about the science fair coming up as well as a weekly newsletter to keep you informed of what we are learning in class for the week. I also included an uppercase and lowercase worksheets to keep at home and practice with your child. March 27 - Frogs, frogs everywhere! My 7 little speckled frogs did excellent today learning about a frog's life cycle! We created an art project which you will find hanging in the classroom. Each child had to trace the words of the different cycles. They had a lot of fun jumping like frogs and counting numbered lilly pads to help with number recognition! They even got to race little toy frogs to their pond! We had our Sedar today and the food was delicious! The Rabbi came to tell the school about Passover and its traditions. We will continue to learn about Passover tomorrow in our class. In your child's backpack, you will find your child's partner(s) for the science fair along with their parents names and contact information. I hope you enjoy the work your child has been doing and I enjoy seeing/hearing about how the kids are doing work at home as well! March 28 - Today was all about Passover. The kids got to decorate their own Matzoh to take home. They also decorated kiddish cups. They were amazed at the chemical reaction between baking soda and white vinegar when we mixed it with food coloring! Math was fun with the BOOM! game! Each of your children has their own game to play at home! Feel free to shuffle the cards to challenge them! We hope everyone has a great holiday and enjoy the time off! April 9 - Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday and vacation! Today the children learned about the letter P and one to one number recognition of numbers 1- 10. They practiced writing the letter P on the promethean board and watched some educational videos about the letter and what words start with it. I introduced the science project that we will begin to work on this week. The children are excited to get working on it! April 10 - We had a fun day today with our rainbow experiments! We created rainbows on the wall using a cd and a flashlight and then we used m&ms and water to make another rainbow! We will be working on more experiments tomorrow! The children used their fine motor skills and ripped up some paper to make abstract rainbows! We concentrated more on the letter P with building it out of wood pieces and practiced writing it with our finger using a chalkboard and some water! The children also watched videos about the water cycle and the science behind how a rainbow appears. April showers bring....rainbows! April 11 - Today was a busy day! The children worked on their tin foil boats for our science project. They also built a rainbow out of legos! They worked on their handwriting skills by doing some letter P worksheets. They created 2 art projects using rain. A mixed media rain cloud with rain drops and a finger painting of rain! Take a look for these projects on the bulletin board. Spring weather is finally here and today was our first day playing outside! We also brought some of the outside, inside our classroom with a sandbox! The children had fun playing with the different items in the sand! April 12 - The children learned about clouds with a rain experiment. We put shaving cream on top of a clear cup of water and then added food coloring on top. As the food coloring sank through the cloud, it "rained". We concentrated on math today with a fun game of "guess the number" and a 11-20 tracing worksheet. April 13 - Happy Friday! The children learned how rain was made with a science experiment, they loved taking turns and squeezing the "clouds" (cotton balls) to make the water come out! We also did number recognition and used fine motor skills with a cut and paste worksheet. Have a great weekend and we will see everyone next week! April 16 - This week we are learning about Earth Day and recycling. The class created a robot out of recycled materials! Take a look at it in the hallway. We also learned about the letter B and practiced writing it and creating an art project with the letter. Thank you to those who brought in recycled items for our projects we will be creating. April 17 - We had a lot of fun learning about how to recycle and help our Earth. The children made earth art projects, and practiced writing the words Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We also had a fun volcano experiment! April 18 - Today we had a special visitor come from Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay. He read a book and taught us all about sea stars and the children got to do a craft! They can't wait to go on a field trip to the Waterfront Center to learn more! If you haven't done so already, please send in money for your child to go on the field trip on May 3rd. A form was sent home with your child yesterday. The numbers we concentrated on today was 7 and 9. The children made a butterfly out of recycled materials and worked on their handwriting with a worksheet. Just a reminder, we need a family photo for each student in the classroom. Please have those in by Friday. Thank you and have a great day!
