IMPORTANT DATES: Tuesday, September 5: Welcome BBQ—6:30
September Wednesday, September 6- Today was a great first day. We painted frames for our "1st Day of School Pictures". We played with new orange play dough and lots of other toys in our exciting classroom. Before we said goodbye we had circle time and sang lots of songs. There is no school tomorrow, Miss Cindy and Miss Marlene will see everyone on Friday. :) Thursday, September 7-NO SCHOOL Friday, September 8-Today we all explored our room a little on our own. I think we did very well, everyone seemed more comfortable "spreading their wings" -- walking around without mom or dad. We had our first snack as a class and everyone sat at the table ,it was an amazing sight and a great photo opportunity. Have a great weekend we'll see everyone on Monday. Monday, September 11-Our first day without our mommies or daddies and we did GREAT. There were a few tears but most of the day was tear free. We loved the playground; the sand, slides and running around outside was our favorite part of the day. We dot dotted paper measuring tape which we will use to measure how tall each child is. This week's theme is "All About ME" Tuesday, September 12- As I mentioned at "Meet The Teacher " night the second day would probably bring more tears then the first. That being said they ended quickly and most of the day was filled with smiles. We painted houses for our family photos which will be hanging around our room shortly. We had circle time where we're learning to recognize our friends and match shapes and colors that correspond to our picture attendance cards. Wednesday, September 13-Today we made a puzzle picture of our face using a cut up picture of ourselves. We discussed above, under and next to as we placed our pieces on our face puzzle. Everyone's interpretation is different as you can see when you check out our art work outside our classroom. Thursday, September 14-Today was a really good day; there is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel, I am so proud of our children. Today we had music with Mr. Mike, he played his guitar and we sang and danced along with the music. We sang some songs we know and then he taught us some new funny songs. Ask them to sing the bubble gum song for you. Friday, September 15-Today we had our first Shabbat, we sang traditional Shabbat songs, lit candles and ate delicious challah. We shared our Shabbat with Miss Amy's class and then we all went to the promethean board to learn about colors. It was a really nice day. Have a great weekend, we'll see you Monday. Monday, September 18-Today we conducted our first science experiment. We had 3 bottles,1 with blue water,1 with yellow water and 1 empty. We then poured some yellow water into the empty bottle followed by some blue water and when we mixed it all up we made GREEN water. We then read the book ; little blue, little yellow by Leo Lionni. This week we have a lot of fun activities planned around little blue and little yellow . Tuesday, September 19-Today was all about "PLEASE and THANK YOU", we learned a new song that helps remind us to always use our magic words. We practiced being kind to each other by sharing our toys and waiting for our turn during circle time. It is really nice to observe the children recognizing each others pictures and interacting with each other. And it's only the second week of school. Wednesday, September 20-Today we had a delicious snack of "Apples and Honey" a Jewish tradition and symbol for Rosh Hashanah wishing everyone a sweet New Year. We also had a great day with our musical instruments. We marched and danced and tried to guess what song Miss Marlene was "playing". And I use the word playing loosely but we had a great time. Enjoy your extended weekend and a Happy and Healthy to all our friends. Thursday, September 21-NO SCHOOL Friday, September 22-NO SCHOOL Monday, September 25- This week we will discuss Christopher Columbus, maps and our home. Today we started to make a map of our classroom. We learned to use water color paints: the process is water, paint, paper repeat. We enjoyed the warm weather outside in the playground with our friends from Miss Amy's class. Tuesday, September 26-Today we made a house out of shapes, we used triangles, squares and rectangles. We played a game where we matched our foam blocks to our paper shapes. The children were very creative with play dough and some little plastic family figures, they loved pretending they had mommies, daddies ,babies and even cats and dogs. They are really doing great. We are very proud of them :). Wednesday, September 27-Today we talked about Columbus,we learned that he discovered America where we live and that used a boat for his journey. We sang a new song about his travels and then we did tested various objects to see what would float and what would sink. The children loved the water play and didn't even realize they were conducting a science experiment. Thursday, September 28-Today we finished our classroom maps, they loved putting themselves on the map.We also tested our boats in water, it was so exciting to see them float. Please take them out of their backpacks they can use them in the bathtub. It was a very busy day: we had a fire drill ,music with Mr. Mike and 2 art projects. The horn in we made symbolizes the ram's horn which is blown in celebration of the Jewish New Year. It is called a Shofar and they loved blowing it . Have a wonderful weekend; NO SCHOOL FRIDAY Friday, September 29- NO SCHOOL
October Monday, October 2-Apples, apples and more apples; today we painted with apples, tasted apples and made a graph of our results. We learned that apples grow from seeds that are planted in the ground and they grow into trees and come in different colors. Some are sweet and some are sour, we know that from some of the faces they made after tasting a green granny smith. Tuesday, October 3-Today we read the book "Ten Apples Up On Top " by Dr Seuss and used the book as the theme of the day. We made our very own book with our pictures and we will be sending home to share with every family over the next few weeks. Please read it with your child and enjoy. Later in the day we used the Promethean Board to learn a song based on the book, we danced and sang all about apples. Wednesday, October 4-Today we made caramel covered apples. We used all of our senses to examine the ingredients:caramels and apples. We looked, touched, tasted and smelled the apples and caramels while we made them. They were a big success, everyone dipping the apples and most of all eating them.We also hung up our Sukkot decorations in the Sukkah. Sukkot is an autumn harvest festival, it was when the Jewish people gathered the crops .A Sukkah is a temporary structure that has an "open" roof so we can see the sky.Enjoy your extended weekend :) Thursday, October 5-NO SCHOOL Friday, October 6-NO SCHOOL Monday, October 9-NO SCHOOL Tuesday, October 10-This week is we'll be concentrating on fire safety.Today we made ourselves into fire boys and fire girls, they'll be hanging outside our room for everyone to see. We learned about fire safety with the help of Elmo and the promethean board. We sang a song about calling 911 if we need help and if theres a fire we have to crawl on the floor and get out of the house. Please let us know if they talk about what we do in school, its nice to know what they are understanding about our lessons. Wednesday, October 11-Today our lesson on fire safety included observing a lighted birthday candle, we blew it out and watched the smoke drift up to the ceiling and we each took a turn smelling the smoke. We learned that fire is HOT and we should never touch it. We also learned that if we smell smoke we get mommy and daddy and crawl on the floor to get out of the house. They really enjoyed our science lesson today, they were such good listeners we'll be doing many more interactive experiments in the following weeks. Enjoy your long weekend, next week a FULL 5 days yay:) Thursday, October 12-NO SCHOOL. Friday, October 13-NO SCHOOL Monday, October 16-Today we made pumpkins using different materials. We used foam, paper and paint. The children had a great time creating their masterpieces. We also used blocks to build bridges and others structures that could hold our mini pumpkins. They really enjoyed placing the pumpkins under and on top of their structures. Tuesday, October 17-Today we made some beautiful crafts in preparation for our Diwali celebration. We made a "mosaic candle " out of paper plates and small pieces of colorful papers. We also did"henna painting"using lace dollies. They came out great. Please check out our bulletin board our finished pieces are on display. Wednesday, October 18-Today was a very special day at our school, we had a big Diwali celebration. Diwali is the Hindu New Year ,also called the Festival Of Light. We painted clay pots called "Diyas" and dressed up in traditional Indian clothing. But the very best part of our celebration was all the delicious traditional foods we tasted. Thank you to all of our wonderful moms who put together this very special celebration. Thursday, October 19-Today we made an edible pumpkin patch. We made chocolate pudding, using our math skills when we measured our ingredients. Then using an electric beater we watched as the liquid mixture thickened and became delicious pudding. We then created "dirt" using a hammer and wood block to crush the cookies. Our final product was delicious. Friday, October 20- Today we celebrated Shabbat with delicious challah and many fun songs. We also had a lot of fun doing various science and engineering activities with our pumpkins. We did a sink and float experiment and was surprised that our little pumpkin floated. We also made bridges out of different materials that we then balanced our pumpkins on. And finally we made a tunnel out of our big pumpkin that our wooden trains were able to ride through. It was a VERY FULL day. Monday, October 23-This week is all about leaves, the weather and we also have an author of the week: Lois Ehlert. Today we used our time outside to collect sticks, leaves and other items we found laying our playground. We will be using all of our collected items for a very special collage. Our snack today was delicious red apples, not only did we eat them we did a little apple investigation. We discovered that inside every apple is a hidden star with 5 seeds. After snack we painted using the the "star" as a stamp/paintbrush. Tuesday, October 24-Today we read "Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert, the children really enjoyed the story and it became an inactive activity as they started to get up and point out what I was reading about. It was wonderful watching them participate and move the lesson in a whole different direction. I bought in lots of different size pumpkins and we did a little pumpkin investigation. We weighed them on a scale ,we used a tape measure to measure them and then the most fun part we all got to pick them up and compare big/little and heavy/light. It was a great day even with all the rain outside. Wednesday, October 25-Today we bought the outdoors in. We had collected lots and lots of leaves, many colors, shapes and sizes and I put them all around our room and we played, sorted and then made a "Leaf Man" collage with the real leaves. It was a lot of fun ,we all loved making a big mess with the leaves and I have to compliment all the kids because they helped Miss Cindy and I clean everything up. We really do have a lot of fun while we learn. Speaking of fun we will be having a Halloween celebration, they can wear costumes --NO MASKS. A note with details will go home. Thursday, October 26-We set up a leaf collection on the floor ,we covered it with clear contact and the children were fascinated by it . They walked on it and touched, after they explored it on their on we showed them how to make a leaf rubbing. Their faces were priceless when they discovered what was happening. Please look at our classroom bulletin boards for your child's work. Friday, October 27- Today was Shabbat which we all love because we get to have challah for snack. We made beautiful "stained glass" leaves and read some of our favorite Fall books. Please remember Tuesday is our trip to the Firehouse and our Halloween celebration. Costumes are encouraged we are looking forward to another great week. Enjoy your weekend. Monday, October 30-Today we learned about spider and used our fine motor skills when we stacked plastic spiders onto straws. We also made personalized trick or treat bags . Everyone painted their very own real mini pumpkin ,tomorrow all their treats will come home.REMINDER--We are visiting the firehouse and we be celebrating Halloween in our class. Costumes are encouraged NO MASKS,SWORDS, etc. Tuesday, October 31-HAPPY HALLOWEEN to everybody. Today was so fun filled and special. First of all everyone looked great in their costumes, our room was so festive. Soon after we all arrived we went to the playground for some free air and running around. Then we all walked to the firehouse with the entire school, we saw real firemen and went into a real firetruck; it was great. And if that was enough we made chocolate spiders. We examined and tasted the chocolate ,then we melted it and tasted it again. We talked about the difference between the chocolates. We added pretzel sticks for legs--8 of course, and white M&M's for eyes. Not only was our snack educational and scientific, it was DELICIOUS.
November Wednesday,November 1--Today we started talking about Election Day and learned a new song about the colors of our flag. We also added some new songs to our circle time. We now include a song about the days of the week and we spell each child's name. It is a fun way to learn new things. The most special part of our day was "painting" with shaving cream and then adding foam blocks and building with the sharing cream as a " cement". It was a new experience that most of the children really enjoyed. They had it all over, so if your child smelled kind of soapy its the shaving cream. Thursday, November 2--Today we started making our handprint flag.We painted our hands and then pressed, pressed.pressed.I will say most of the children really love getting messy with paint. Tomorrow we will finish the flag using white paint and our fingers to make the stars. We had music with Mr. Mike one of our favorite activities. Our favorite song of Mr. Mike's is Bumble Gum,see if your children will sing it for you. Friday, November 3--We sing wonderful traditional songs, set a pretty table and eat delicious challah bread when we celebrate Shabbat. The weather was so wonderful we had a great time in the playground, we love being outside. We finished off our week of spiders with a Fizzing Frozen Spider Experiment. We mixed baking soda with a little water and hid our plastic spiders in the mixture and then put it in the freezer. Later in the day we mixed some vinegar with food coloring and let the magic begin. Each child took a dropper filled with the vinegar and squirted it onto the frozen baking soda block. The vinegar and baking soda create a chemical reaction causing fizzing, bubbles and melting. We continued until we were able to dig out all our spiders. It was a fun experience for all . Have a great weekend. Monday, November 6--Today was Election Day in the Toddler room. We discussed what it means to vote; choosing which one we like best. Today's choice was between Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse stickers, please look at our Election Day bulletin board to see the process and results of the election. We also voted on two delicious cookies an for snack ;Oreo or chocolate chip. I must confess even though Oreo was the winner we all tasted a little of both. We've started talking about Thanksgiving. Over the next week we will be adding many new objects to our classroom that we can use to tell the Thanksgiving story. Wednesday, November 8--We're starting to talk about Thanksgiving.Today we talked about things long, long ago .Did you know there were no stores to buy paint in, there wasn't even paint to buy. What to do? We did an experiment. We took some cranberries and smashed them and guess what; we made "paint". We fingerprinted with our results it was messy but a lot of fun. Ask your kids about it, they had a great time with our homemade paint. Thursday, November 9--Today we started decorating our class for Thanksgiving. We painted a big turkey together as a class,it will be hanging on our bulletin board next week. Some of us love paint so much they paint their hands, it makes us smile watching them investigate the color and the texture of the paint. At this age learning comes through touch, taste and smell a lot of times and watching them discover something new is always exciting.Enjoy your weekend. Friday, November 10--NO SCHOOL Monday, November 13--Today was a special day at school, we celebrated Katherine's birthday. We sang to Katherine 2 times and made a beautiful birthday card for her. Please dress them in jackets that are warm enough for this weather. We always try get outside for gym. Wednesday, November 15--Today we made some handprint turkeys, they love to paint their hands. We added feathers' beck and a red waddle. The feathers became a multi sensory experience. We touched them and blew them around, they really enjoyed playing with the feathers. We started a very exciting lesson today, it involves teaching the children to put on their own jackets. It's called the Fireman Flip.We place their jackets on the floor ,stand at the neck opening, put in their hands and FLIP. Hence the Fireman Flip,we will be practicing that alot. They are always so proud when they can start putting on their coats by themselves. Please help and encourage them. :) Thursday, November 16--PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCESToday we started working on our Thanksgiving costume, we are going to be turkeys. We made tepees for our Thanksgiving play village and the best part of our day--we made BUTTER. Tuesday, November 28--Today we read If You Give A Pig A Pancake and we did a project counting how many pancakes our pigs ate.We also made play dough cookies and pancakes and put them on a real cookie sheet to"bake" them. When they were"cooked" we used a spatula to put them onto our plates. It was a great exercise in hand eye coordination. We also enjoyed a special story time with Miss Amy's class. Wednesday, November 29--Today we read If You Give A Cat A Cupcake and then we made pretend cupcakes that looked so good the children watched to eat them. We also reviewed our knowledge of shapes and made a mouse out of different shapes. Check out our work hanging on the bulletin board. Thursday, November 30--Today was an interesting day, we had a Shelter in Place drill. Our children followed our directions perfectly ,they lined up and we walked to the gym ,then we sat in our designated place. Shelter in Place is used in case of severe weather such as a hurricane. We leave our rooms for an area with no windows to keep us safe . Today we also did some fun science ,we made syrup paint for our paper pancakes. We mixed Karo syrup with yellow food coloring. It made a shiny paint ,we tasted it, it was sweet. We touched it ,it was very sticky and we painted with it. It was much thicker then regular paint. We also painted a hedgehog for our school hibernation mural. Another fun and busy day.

The room is is very festive with all the holiday decorations we're making and the holiday music we are listening to. Today while singing the Dreidel Song we all played with various dreidels, they really enjoyed trying to make them spin. Some of the children were able to spin them on their own and their faces told the story of how proud they were of their accomplishments. We also made a cave and bears to hang up in our room. The eyes on the bears open and shut, so-so cute. Wednesday,December 6--Today we made delicious edible caves for our little bear cookies. We used graham crackers, frosting and tiny little graham bears. The children really enjoyed preparing their snack but honestly they LOVED eating much more.We were even able to make our snack into a math lesson, we counted how many bears we put in the cave and discovered that our cave was a triangle. We talked more about hibernating animals and how some hibernate under the ground and some over the ground. We played a game guessing if the toy I had was UNDER the table or OVER the table. It was a lot of fun. REMINDER:Send in your RSVP's for our holiday party AND Tomorrow is our Hibernation Party-Children should wear pajamas and can bring a teddy bear if they wish. We painted stars, we mixed white and blue paint to make light blue. Creating new colors is always exciting. We also made some paper plate Christmas trees. We have new green play dough and a dreidel mold, we made play dough dreidels; they are pretend so they don't spin I was told. We practiced our holiday songs today with our class jingle bells. They really enjoy music and movement as a combined activity. Combining music and movement helps children learn to control their bodies. They learn to move fast to fast music, and more slowly to slow tunes.Learning physical control is an important developmental step and can help build concentration skills and self-control later on. Monday,December 11--This week's theme is "Let's Build It",today we started painting many different size boxes for our projects. In the upcoming days we will be constructing different holiday themed decorations out of them. We can't wait to show them off at our party. We had a very pleasant surprise today, gingerbread boy/girl cookies. We decorated them with delicious and colorful candies and then the best part we ate them. Yummy, yummy. We want to send Dr. Friedman a very big thank you for getting the school such a creative and delicious snack. Tuesday,December 12--Happy Hanukkah - Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah. For 8 nights our candles will burn so bright celebrating the Jewish Festival of Lights. On each of the 8 nights a candle is lit in a special candelabra called a menorah. The menorah has 9 candles the middle candle is called the Shamash ; it is the helper candle ,it is lit first and then used to light all the other candles.. We made beautiful foam glitter menorahs that will be displayed on our bulletin board. Todays science experiment also celebrated Hanukkah. We lit our class menorah with real candles. We observed what happens to candles when you don't blow them out. They get smaller and smaller until they disappear, the children were fascinated that the candles just disappeared. Wednesday,December 13 & Thursday, December 14--It's been a very busy few days. We finished our presents for our families and we can't wait to give them to you. We constructed our snowman and menorah, they are on display in the hall. We painted a six pointed star ( a Jewish Star)and counted the points together. We also made ourselves into little elves ,we marble painted our outfits. Everything is on display on our bulletin boards or inside our classroom. Friday,December 15--Today we looked at stars. We counted the points and found some had 6 points and some had 5. We gave the children 2 triangles and showed them how to form a 6 pointed star. We were very impressed how with a little help they were able to make them on their on. We also gave them stickers which they love and we made star collages. Have a wonderful weekend ,we are looking forward to our holiday party on Wednesday. Monday,December 18--Today we made our holiday hats for our party. They are so cute. We also practiced singing our songs for the party. This week isn't only about the holidays we are doing an author study of Eric Hill and his Spot the dog books. Today we on the Promethean board we watched a lesson on Eric Hill's -Where Is Spot ?. Tuesday,December 19--We were busy little monkeys today. We did our final preparations for our holiday party. We baked yummy cupcakes and delicious red crinkle cookies. We measured, mixed and stirred everything together and then we observed how a liquid batter turns into cupcakes when put into a hot oven. They really enjoyed our baking lesson today. We also had a visit from Bonnie Grubman. She is the author who wrote How To Make A Mouse To Smile! Of course the best part of a party is eating all the delicious food, the cookies, cupcakes, latkes ,applesauce and even our cereal candy canes. We want to thank everyone who came and helped make our holiday celebration special. Thursday, December 21--Today is the winter solstice, also known as the first day of winter. It is the shortest day of the year — the day with the least amount of sunlight. We learned that winter is one of the four seasons. Winter is cold, snow, Christmas, gloves, hats, coats and boots. We hope your all loved the present that your children made, they really enjoyed the process and the final results. Friday,December 22-- Today we made New Years hat to welcome in 2018. January 2018 Tuesday,January 2--Welcome back-we hope everyone had a wonderful break. We missed you all. This week we will be celebrating all the seasons. We'll talk about the changes that occur in each season and learn what their names are. Today our focus was on WINTER. We will also be experimenting with water, how does it become ice? and why does it melt.?The cold temperatures this week will really help with that. We listened and watched to The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keatsand Mouse's First Snow by Lauren Thompson. The children really enjoyed the stories. Wednesday,January 3--Today we continued talking about the 4 seasons. We learned some new songs to help us remember their names. We talked about how very cold it is outside and how water turns into ice. We put 4 cups outside our class window with water in them. After 1 hour we checked on them and found that the water had turned into ice. The expressions on their faces when they touched the water now ice was priceless, big smiles and lots of wows. After our experiment we went into Spring and talked about how it rains a lot during this season and all the rain helps the flowers and trees to start to grow. Our Promethean Board time today featured some wonderful, colorful, informational lessons about the seasons. Please check Iken STEM for updates on tomorrow's weather. Thursday,January 4--SCHOOL CLOSED --Snow Day Friday,January 5---SCHOOL CLOSED --Snow Day Monday,January 8--Today we were finally able to check on our science experiment. The cups of water outside our classroom window did turn to ice. We then all had a chance to touch the ice ,it was very, very COLD. We put on mittens and touched the ice again and it wasn't cold. We kept the ice in our room for the rest of the day and guess what--it started to melt and turned back into water. WOW! Who knew science was so much fun. Tuesday.January 9--Today we had did math with mittens.Everyone took a turn lying down and we measured how many mittens tall we were. We also made rainbows using rolling pins and paint. In honor of Martin Luther King we talked about a single colored rainbows vs. a multi colored rainbows; we all thought the many colored rainbow was prettier. We also celebrated Mia's 3rd birthday today. Thank you to Mia and her family for the delicious birthday cake and goody bags. Wednesday,January 10--Today the Cornell Dairy Coop visited our school. We met Buttercup the "cow". We learned that cows eat hay and corn. They make milk to feed their baby calves. We all got a chance to milk the cow ,with that milk we made ice cream. It was so yummy. We also used our fine motor skills to make plastic bottle snowman. We crumbled white paper, put it into the bottles and added a carrot nose,2 eyes, a hat, a scarf and 2 arms and made a very unique snowman. Thursday,January 11--Thursdays are always fun because we have music with Mr. Mike. The children really enjoy all his silly songs and loved dancing and jumping to the music. We read The Mitten by Jan Brett which they really enjoyed. Afterwards we creatively painted using mittens, it was a new experience enjoyed by most. Later we looked at mittens and gloves and compared the differences. Gloves showed all 5 fingers while a mitten only shows the thumb and the other fingers as a bunch. PLEASE SEND IN WIPES -we share them as a class. Any children still in diapers please send in more thank you in advance for your help. Monday,January 15--NO SCHOOL-Martin Luther King Day Tuesday.January 16--This week is all about penguins. During our Promethean Board time we learned that penguins glide, slide, dive and swim but they do NOT fly. We have a tiny rubber penguin that grows in water, today we measured the penguin, placed it in a jar and added water. Tomorrow we will check on it's progress and chart our observations. We also played a game called "Where Is Waddles" ,we hide Waddles our little purple penguin and take turns finding him. While playing our fun game we are learning patience as we each wait for our turn and concentration as we have to concentrate and watch where each person hides Waddle's. It's going to be a really fun week. Wednesday,January 17--What a wonderful Wednesday we had . We started the day decorating a card for Natalie's 3rd birthday. During snack I read Peek-A-Boo Penguin and we talked all about our black and white feathered friends. Later we did a wonderful penguin art project. We created ink blot penguin paintings, they came out beautiful and every child was so excited to do this project. We then finished our day celebrating Natalie's birthday with a delicious lion cake and a fun "snowball" game. Thank you to Natalie and her family for our snack and goodie bags. Thursday,January 18-- This week we learned that penguins are black and white, come from eggs which the daddy keeps warm and live where its cold. We also learned that their feathers are coated with a special oil which helps themstay warm—penguins survive because their feathers trap a layer of warm air next to the skin that serves as insulation. We did an experiment today using crayons and vaseline to create a waxy coat on our penguins. We then proceeded to spray water on them and watched the water bead up. They really enjoyed the entire process and have learned a lot about penquins. Friday,January 19--Today we created an Arctic habitat for our penguins, we used boxes we painted white, bubble wrap, fake snow and snowballs. They then added trucks and shovels (spoons) to the landscape and we had a very creative morning all done with "kid power". They are working together more and more ,it's wonderful watching them share and play together. We also make painted penguins using two different size potatoes, thats right potatoes. This activity went over color recognition--black and white and size comparison-- big and little. Oh and it was a-lot of fun. Just a friendly reminder our EARLY BIRD special ends at the end of January.Don't miss out, sign your kids up now. Monday,January 22--This week our penguins will have some friends join them in our icy, cold playscape. We will be discussing our arctic friends. The snow owl, walrus, polar bear and beluga whale just to name a few. We learned many interesting facts about the walrus on the Promethean Board. Walruses have tusks, swim, eat fish and have a mustache. We are loving our Arctic Playscape. Tuesday.January 23--Today we had some very special visitors at school. Bob the puppet and Otto the Auto,Otto was a remote control car that came alive and helped teach us car safety rules We learned the importance of car seats and seat belts for everybody young and old. All children MUST sit in car seats anytime they are in a car, IT'S THE LAW .We also learned toalways hold a grown ups hand when crossing the street or walking in a parking lot. Wednesday,January 24--Besides learning about arctic animals this week we've been concentrating on name recognition. With the help of songs, pictures and play dough each child is starting to recognize their own name. It is a very exciting time for them and they are so,so proud of themselves when they can pick their name out of the group. We have also been using our fingers to trace the letters on our name mates. Each child has their own mat with their name on it. Thursday,January25--Today's weather was cold outside and inside the classroom. We created an Arctic landscape out of real ice and shaving cream, to that we added our penguins, polar bears, seals, walruses and other cold weathered friends. We had a great time playing with all the new textures and temperatures (warm and cold). We also conducted an experiment using 3 different size blocks of ice ,large ,medium and small. We discovered when we touched the ice it made our hands wet with water, so our conclusion was that the ice turned to water when it melted. We also asked everyone to make a predication as to which block of ice would melt first. Three of our friends had the correct answer; the little one. It was a very fun and science infused day ! Friday,January 26--Friday means Shabbat ; songs, delicious challah and practicing our pouring skills. Today we started a really fun project, our own personalized "snow globes". We use special water coloring crayons--first we color then we add water to blend. It was a fun process. Have a wonderful weekend. Monday,January 29--Today we started exploring our shadows. We learned that in order to make a shadow the object/our hand must block out the light. During our Promethean Board lesson we learned that the earth's light comes from the sun, it's also what makes us hot. We all had a turn making our shadows on the wall using a flashlight. They loved experimenting with the flashlight, making their shadows bigger, smaller and move around on the wall. Tuesday.January 30--Today we continued our exploration of shadows.Every child was given a flashlight and went around discovering the concepts of light and dark, as well as big and little. It was exciting watching them get involved and then showing their friends. I added magnets and magnetic tiles to our classroom. They constructed some awesome structures ,check them out in our picture section. Wednesday,January 31--We finished our snow globes today. Each child used their tiny little fingers to pick up even tinier little snowflakes and put them into their bottles. They then added silver glitter and we helped them pour water into their bottles. This was a lesson in patience, control and math--we measured 1 1/2 cups of water for each bottle. All that plus an exercise in fine motor skills. With the sun finally coming out please take a moment with your child and point out their shadow to them. They have been fascinated with this topic , they're really enjoying discovering movement and sizes of their shadows. February Thursday, February 1--Thursdays are music with Mr. Mike one our favorite days. We have been working on our own name recognition , it's a fun and educational process in our Toddler class. We sing a name song at circle time and we have their name and pictures all around our room. Labeling and rhymes/songs are ways we encourage speech and pre reading skills. Our day includes many diverse ways to learn; playing, routines, songs, books and art all of these activities are learning experiences for your children. Friday, February 2-- Happy Groundhogs Day, as you know Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, sadly 6 more weeks of winter. In our room all of our furry little groundhogs also saw their shadows, with the help of our flashlights. Have a fun weekend and stay warm. :) Monday, February 5--Today we introduced simple machines, tools and magnetic trains and tracks into our classroom. When they walked in and saw our new additions their creative ideas just started flowing . They build some impressive tracks with bridges and inclines. They also discovered that our simple tools were magnetic and created so fun structures. Our Promethean board lesson focused on smiple machines such as pulleys, levers and inclines; we will be using them in our classroom all week. We ended our day with some magnetic painting, a very full day it was. Tuesday, February 6--Today we started working on the hats we will be wearing to our Chinese new year celebration. We all had a turn using hammers, socket wrenches and pilers to hammers nails and screws into wood blocks. Using simple tools was a lesson in hand eye coordination and safety . We read a wonderful book Bringing in The New Year by Grace Li. Wednesday,February 7--Today our favorite dental hygienist from Smile Station visited us. She showed us the correct way to brush our teeth and told us our mommies and daddies should help us floss our teeth. We talked about how healthy foods are not only good for our teeth but they are also good for our bodies. She said candy was ok to have once in a while but that we should always brush our teeth afterwards to clean off the sticky sugar. We watched a fun and educational puppet show and then we all had a turn to brush the green dinosaur's teeth. We want to say thank you for goody bag from the Smile Station . Thursday, February 8--Today our gym was transformed into an ice skating rink. We sprayed the mats with shaving cream and with the help of Miss Alyssa and Miss Hong we skated away. A perfect end to "ice skating" is "hot chocolate with marshmallows" (chocolate milk). Our art project today was paper skates and mugs of hot chocolate that we water colored. It was a great day. Friday, February 9--We continued our skating party today by making delicious Hot Chocolate Cookie Cups. Cooking helps young children learn and practice some basic math concepts and build language skills. Children learn by exploring with their senses and the cooking/baking is an ideal place to do that. Reading the recipe, measuring the ingredients, listening to the sound of the mixer, rolling out dough, the smell it baking in the oven, and finally tasting the finished product. We also made our lanterns for Chinese New Year. Have a wonderful weekend. Monday, February 12--This is a very busy week. Getting ready for Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year and President's Day. We're be doing a few science experiments and making some edible crafts and treats. Today we started our Valentine surprises and did some cool transfer print painting. Our paintings will be on the bulletin board, please take a moment to check them out. Tuesday, February 13--Today we talked about President's Day.We read This Little President: A Presidential Primer by Joan Holub. After reading the book a few of the children told us they were going to be president when they got bigger. We did an experiment with pennies, weset up water, milk, vinegar and soda and the children dropped a penny into their choice of liquid. tomorrow we will check and see which liquid cleaned our pennies! We also made Chinese dragons using circles and patterns. They did a great job. Wednesday,February 14--HAPPY VALENTINE"S DAY--We had a really great day today. First we checked on our science experiment with the coins. We learned two things--1. If you don't put milk in the refrigerator it smells very bad, gets chunky and 2. It doesn't clean pennies!! We observed that the 7UP (soda) did the best job. Today we had a scavenger heart hunt. We then sorted them according to size--big and little. We also made our initials out of candy conversation hearts.Of course we tasted some of them but I was so proud, they did NOT eat the ones we used for gluing :). We also started another experiment with the candy hearts. We put them into different liquids and tomorrow we will see which ones melted. And if all that wasn't enough Miss Rebecca did a fascinating experiment with balloons and various liquids. They had cool chemical reactions, one even blew up because of the mentos and soda reaction. Please take a moment and look at our pictures . Thursday, February 15--What a wonderful day we had today. We made "fire breathing dragons",had music with Mr. Mike ,saw the results of our experiment and had a very delicious and entertaining Chinese New Year celebration with all of our friends. We observed our candy hearts and discovered that they dissolved in the clear soda first (7 UP). We want to thank all the families that contributed to our celebration, your hard work and creative ideas produced a fabulous time for all. Happy Chinese New Year to all ! NO SCHOOL--Friday,February 16-Friday, February 23 --winter break Monday, February 26-- Tuesday, February 27-- Wednesday,February 28-- March
